Talking Butterfly - I Am a Butterfly Picture Book

Kirkus Review for I Am a Butterfly

“A monarch butterfly tells the story of her life cycle in this nature-themed picture book.

In this informative work, a monarch butterfly takes young readers through each stage of her existence, relating her origin as a “teeny-tiny egg on a leaf,” the “soft, velvety darkness” of her chrysalis, and her subsequent discovery of her sun-warmed wings and strawlike, nectar-sipping “new tongue.”

Nature photographer, Stone (Golden Words, 2015, etc.), the recipient of an Audubon Top 100 photography award and author of nonfiction works for adults, draws children into this real-life story of metamorphosis with resonant simplicity. An image of a penny demonstrates the relative size of the tiny butterfly egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and adult monarch.

… The book ends with a list of intriguing butterfly facts (they “taste with their feet,” for instance), a pictorial chart of the monarch’s life cycle, photos of other butterfly types, tips on how to help stop the monarch’s slow flight toward the endangered list, and links to resources for further exploration.

An engaging book for children with vivid photographs and a simple, graceful narrative.” Kirkus Reviews

Praise for I Am a Butterfly

“I Am a Butterfly” is an exquisite, metaphorical children’s book describing the organic transformation of one butterfly as it moves through its life cycle. The various life cycle stages, so beautifully photographed, parallel the process and patience needed to mindfully cultivate awareness of our own human experience of change.

Sally Stone is an award-winning author and nature photographer. Her photos have won several awards, notably Audubons Top 100 and a Chicago Botanic Garden Special Mention.

When she isn’t writing, teaching, or behind the camera, Sally can often be found on long walks in nature, reading, tending her native garden, meditating—or enjoying a good movie with her mom.

Each summer and fall, Sally raises monarch butterflies from eggs laid in her native garden, releasing between 40 and 75 monarchs each year. She delights in sharing the monarch life cycle with neighbors, children, teachers, and community members. Her photographs of the monarch life cycle are featured on her website and have been used in educational resources, as well as in her children’s picture book, I Am a Butterfly.

Sallys love for childrens books began in childhood and never ended. For twenty-three years, she worked with children and teachers, first in her classroom, then as a coach and university professor. Along the way, she helped hundreds of students write and publish their own stories.

She holds a master’s degree and a doctorate in education from National Louis University. During her public teaching career, she received multiple honors, including a State of Illinois Merit Award and the Christa McAuliffe Science Teaching Award.
